Description

"Denton County has never had a lynching. It went through without any such trouble. But in the relatively recent year of 1897 it came very near to mutilating that good record. Only the alertness of the sheriff in secretly removing to another county two men whom the mob later sought upset the suspected plan of a large group of angry men who had rushed to the county seat seeking the men whom they believed the murderers of their friend."

"A few weeks alter they were tried and the one who confessed to striking Coverly was given a penitentiary sentence, and the other, except for the jail break wanted only for a misdemeanor, escaped with a lighter sentence. So far as known neither ever returned to Denton County after completing their prison terms."
